Co-operative AIFFLA

In 2011 the International Co-operative for the Development of Latin-American Railways AIFFLA is already five years old.

Up to now AIFFLA is still heavily dependent from its mother organisation FLB. This should change now. Buy AIFFLA bonds and help to make AIFFLA independent and powerful. AIFFLA is already working.

Buy bonds to make AIFFLA strong and independent. For yourself or as a gift to friends and relatives who like Latin America and railways.

AIFFLA has already helped in Uruguay with the purchase of a rail bus for the co-operative Urutren. Urutrain is a co-operative which has been founded in  the spirit of AIFFLA.

In addition AIFFLA has accepted to contribute to the reconstruction of a Locobreque of the old São Paulo - Santos incline, as soon as a corresponding financing and work plan has been established

These are only two activities; more will follow soon.

Inform yourself on the home page www.aiffla.com

There are bonds of CHF50.00 and CHF100.00 which can be acquired in unlimited quantities. The co-operative is established according to Swiss law. Co-operative bond holders are only liable to the sum of bonds acquired and not any further.

Orders may be placed at:

FAHRPLANCENTER, S. Rachdi, Bahnhof, CH-6422 Steinen SZ, fahrplancenter@fahrplancenter.com , your order will be forwarded. Interested customers in EU countries may pay to a German account, excluding high international money transfer rates.

Thank you for supporting AIFFLA.

ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON FEBRUARY 04TH , 2012

Eight members and one guest participated at the Annual General Assembly, which took about one hour. After the AGA Patrick Rudin presented pictures from the Philippines, a country where Spanish is still widely spoken. The last sugar cane railways on Negros Island, most of them now shut down, and a look at the Manila local transport on rails were the themes. Like our friends in Latin America, the Philippine people also find quick solutions for any problem. Because it wasn’t possible to repair the blue steam locomotive, they repainted the black one in blue overnight, to meet the visitors requirements. Thank you for these pictures.

All further decisions are following here under.

MEMBERSHIP FEES

Despite of the inconvenient exchange rates of Swiss Francs CHF and Euro €, the 2012 membership fee will be maintained at CHF100.00 / €65,00. Depending on the rates' development during 2012 it may be necessary to bring both fees closer together, for example CHF90.00 / €70,00 in 2013. Members will be informed by the end of 2012 and prior to the 2013 General Annual Assembly.

  LATIN AMERICA NEWS

COSTA RICA

Bus companies of the San José region want to cooperate with the state railway’s expansion plans and they want to sustain a transport and fare union for the region. FEVE of Spain commenced with detailed planning for San José’s electric urban railway, including a line to Alajuela. Reconstruction of the San José - Cartago line is 50 pct. complete. The "Tren a la Tica" tourist train is no longer running to Caldera due to damages to the track and the bankruptcy of America Travel. The new operator TRANSFECO is instead operating different tourist trains between March and December, as in 2011, for example between Guápiles or Siquirres and Limón or between Orotina and Cascajal; a program for 2012 is not yet available.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Recent news are confirming that there are still three sugar cane railways active in the Dominican Republic. Narrow gauge networks in the Southwest at Barahona and East of Santo Domingo at San Pedro de Macoris are using GE and Plymouth diesel locomotives. The biggest network, with about 350 km of lines, originates at Central La Romana. The main line stretches about 120 km north of the city of La Romana, and GE locomotives are being employed. The harvest is taking place during 225 days from December to June with frequent traffic; even level crossings are protected. From July to November fewer trains are running, due to track and rolling stock maintenance. Sugar cane is still cut by hand, but all other processes are modernised. There is no passenger transport on these lines.

PERU

Confirmation comes from Danish sources that now all four rail busses and trailers from the Danish Eastern Railway arrived at Huancayo. It is not yet known if these rail busses are already running between Huancayo and Huancavelica.

OSCAR JALICE

For many years Oscar was a member of FLB, but because he has no chance to participate directly on our activities he ceased his member ship at the 2012 Annual General Assembly. But Oscar will remain as our valuable Cuba correspondent. Thank you Oscar!
